On the other hand, they really are important for getting to know people in the industry and allowing them to get to know you. While the ratio is about 25 to 1 of assholes to good-people, it's worth wading through the bullshit to stay up-to-date on industry events and issues. It's a no-win situation, really, because you're stupid if you ignore the boards and you're stupid if you spend too much time on them.

The biggest most-obnoxious board with the most members. It's a hellhole, but of rather vital importance to at least do a little lurking there.

GreenGuy and Jim's Ultimate Adult Webmaster Board
One of the most business-oriented, bullshit-free boards. As usual though, most of the members are industry middlemen, pushers -- not necessarily creators, but hell -- it's a good group of pushers to get to know.

Gay Wide Webmasters
I really like this board - there's a nice variety of people doing different things with the gay side of the industry and is pretty business-focused. It's nice to visit a board without all of the misogyny, but of course you might not have any "business" here if you run straight sites (though lurking will uncover a lot of info that applies just as well to straight sites as to gay).

AmateurMasters
Back in the day this was a great place for "amateurs" aka indie site owner/ops like myself to share tips with each other. It's not as active as it once was (update: in fact, it no longer exists), but I'd love if it were revitalized since there's really no other community specifically for people running their own homemade paysites.

Boycott:

I'm not big on boycotting people or programs that openly express views and practices that don't align with mine, however there are times when people show their colors on message boards that I want to remember never to hire them when there are other people I could work with. Here are some of those people and the reasons why:
